Local government elections are held every two years, on the third Saturday in October.
The Shire of Lake Grace is made up of seven Elected Members and in 2025 four seats will be open for nomination.
The Shire of Lake Grace holds postal elections conducted by the Western Australian Electoral Commission. If you are enrolled you will receive a voting pack in the post around three weeks before election day.
If you plan to post your vote, please allow enough time for it to be received before election day.
NOMINATING FOR COUNCIL
Becoming a Council Member at the Shire of Lake Grace provides an opportunity to be part of the decision-making process and work together with the Shire to create and implement the community’s vision.
If you are an eligible elector and want to make a difference in your community and have a say in local decision-making, you should consider becoming a candidate in the next election.
NOMINATION REQUIREMENTS
To nominate as a Council Member, you must:
- Be on the electoral roll as a resident or personal non-resident owner or occupier of a rateable property in the Shire of Lake Grace
- Be over 18 years of age and not disqualified from being an Elected Member under the Local Government Act.

RESIDENTS ROLL
The Residents Roll is maintained by the Western Australian Electoral Commission. People who live in the Shire of Lake Grace and are enrolled on the State electoral roll will automatically be placed on this roll.

If you are not on the State electoral roll and meet the eligibility criteria, or if you have changed address recently, you must complete an enrolment form via the Australian Electoral Commission website

OWNER-OCCUPIER ROLL
If you are the resident or non-resident owner or occupier of ratable property within the Shire of Lake Grace and you wish to vote or nominate for Council you MUST be on the electoral roll.
If you are not on the roll you may request to be enrolled by completing an Enrolment Eligibility Claim available for download here: Enrolment Eligibility Claim Form
or you may request a copy from the shire office.
This form must be received by our office no later than Friday 22 August 2025
CONDUCTING ELECTIONS
The Electoral Commissioner is responsible for conducting all local government postal elections in Western Australia and can also conduct voting in person elections on request under the Local Government Act 1995. By making the Electoral Commissioner responsible for these elections, the local governments concerned ensure that elections are conducted independently and with impartiality.
For local government elections, rolls close at 5.00 pm, 50 days prior to polling day. All electors should check their details are up to date before rolls close at 5.00pm on Friday 22 August 2025
If the number of candidates is equal to the number of vacancies, the candidate is elected unopposed. If there are more candidates than vacancies, the election will proceed.
While voting in a local government election is not compulsory in Western Australia, all electors are strongly encouraged to vote.
